                  ABOUT son:DA
Slovenian artist duo son:DA (Metka Golec,
                    b. 1972 and Miha Horvat, b. 1976). For their first solo exhibition
in the United States, son:DA is transforming bitforms gallery
with a site-specific installation and drawings.
Using layers of paper cut-outs affixed to the gallery wall,
son:DA’s site-specific installation depicts the messy
spaces of connection. Unpredictable passages of mediated information
take physical form with an overwhelming array of stereo and
computer equipment, cabling and gaffer’s tape. Originally
drawn by hand using a mouse that leaves a heavy contour line,
the printed cutouts are physically arranged into a large-scale
                    collage.
Recalling the anti-utopian lens of Brazil, son:DA exhibit
their markedly ironic view of technology in contemporary culture.
With an approach to drawing that invites the viewer to experience
the work in the first person, son:DA build visual vignettes
that the majority of viewers can relate to. For example, the
view as seen sitting in front of a computer, looking down
at one’s keyboard, mouse in hand—the addition
of a bulbous, bare belly hanging over the table epitomizes
criticism launched against the sedentary and solitary lifestyle
that the age of information has ushered in. In other scenarios
the viewer is confronted with an absurd and disarming display
of the alienating effects of technology as a crowd of waving
and gawking individuals, bearing mobile phones, video and
digital cameras regard and record the viewer as though under
                    a microscope.
Installed on the far wall of the gallery is a cacophony of
cut up screens, speakers, varied media players and winding
electrical cords stacked on top of one another creating a
veritable blockade of tech hardware. The pasted up images
refer to another motif in son:DA’s art—though
they choose to utilize sophisticated and modern technologies
in both production and theme, there is a sense of raw underground
culture that permeates their installations by electing to
use inexpensive paper cut outs and deliberate exposure of
wires and tape in the pristine, white wall gallery environment.
son:DA have participated in numerous exhibitions and festivals
throughout Europe. Past solo exhibitions of their work have
included LaVitrine, Pekarna, Slovenia; Miklovi hisi Ribnica
